Asset Prices and Wealth Inequality∗
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper uses recently available data on the top of the wealth distribution to study the relationship between asset prices and wealth inequality. I document three stylized facts: (1) the share of wealth invested in equity increases sharply in the right tail of the wealth distribution, (2) when stock market returns are high, wealth inequality increases and (3) higher wealth inequality predicts lower future stock returns. These facts correspond to the basic predictions of asset pricing models with heterogeneous agents. Quantitatively, however, standard models with heterogeneous agents cannot fully capture the joint dynamics of asset prices and the wealth distribution. Augmenting the model with additional sources of fluctuations in wealth inequality, namely in the form of time-varying investment opportunities for wealthy households, is crucial to match the observed fluctuations in wealth inequality and in asset prices. ∗I am indebted to Valentin Haddad, Atif Mian, Wei Xiong and Motohiro Yogo for their invaluable guidance. I am also grateful to many seminar presentations, Xavier Gabaix, Leonid Kogan, Ben Moll, Stavros Panageas, Gill Segal, David Sraer, and Gabriel Zucman for helpful discussion and comments. †Princeton University; [email protected]

Life-Cycle Portfolio Choice, the Wealth Distribution and Asset Prices
In this paper we consider a canonical stochastic overlapping generations economy with sequentially complete markets. We examine how aggregate and individual shocks translate to changes in the distribution of wealth and how these movements in the wealth distribution affect asset prices and the interest rate. We show that effects are generally small if agents have identical beliefs but that diffe...
متن کاملAsset Prices and Monetary Policy: Wealth Effects on Consumption
The aim of this paper is to test a model explaining private consumption as a function of income and wealth (financial assets plus real estate), with data from European Union (EU) countries. We know that income explains a large part of consumption as well as wealth, but concerning the effects of the latter, mainly those of changes on financial asset prices, few is known for Europe. In a general ...
متن کاملBelief Heterogeneity, Collateral Constraint, and Asset Prices with a Quantitative Assessment∗
The recent economic crisis highlights the role of financial markets in allowing economic agents, including prominent banks, to speculate on the future returns of different financial assets, such as mortgage-backed securities. This paper introduces a dynamic general equilibriummodel with aggregate shocks, endogeneously incomplete markets and heterogeneous agents to investigate this role of finan...
متن کاملConservative Protestants and Wealth: How Religion Perpetuates Asset Poverty
The association between cultural orientation and material outcomes is fundamental to sociology research. This article contributes to the understanding of this relationship by exploring how religious affiliation affects wealth ownership for conservative Protestants (CPs). The results demonstrate that religion affects wealth indirectly through educational attainment, fertility, and female labor f...
متن کاملEvidence from Rural Ethiopia
This paper considers asset holdings in rural Ethiopia. It shows that households own mostly non-financial assets and that the composition of asset portfolios varies significantly with the household’s overall wealth and its exposure to uncertainty. As regards the distribution of assets, inequality is lowest for land holdings and much higher for all other assets. More generally, asset inequality i...
